Weight Loss The FactsFeatured Popular

Where's the Fat?

Fat is stored in different parts of the body. A large majority of the fat in the human body is stored under the skin in what is called the "Subcutaneous Layer". Fat also surrounds and cushions the vital organs in our body; heart, kidneys, liver. Fat also lies on top and underneath the muscles in our body. Where fat is concentrated in your body depends upon whether you are a man or woman: An adult man tends to carry body fat in his chest, abdomen and buttocks, producing an "apple" shape. An adult woman tends to carry fat in her breasts, hips, waist and buttocks, creating a "pear" shape. If you want to reduce body fat it’s quite simple, you need to start eating fewer calories than you burn up on a daily basis. In time, your body will start converting fat into useable energy, and by doing so, fat stores will begin to vanish across your body. But they won't just magically disappear from one particular place in other words you cannot spot reduce fat. You should only aim to lose 1~2lbs per week though you would probably lose more on your first week of dieting.

Male

If you are a male, abdominal fat is probably the last fat that will disappear from your body. First your body will remove fat from your face and extremities, such as your arms and legs, then it will remove fat from your upper torso, your chest, upper thighs and buttocks, and lastly it will use the fat stored in your abdomen.

Female

For women, this means the last place you're likely to lose the fat is on the hips and buttocks. This is something you may have noticed before when on a diet, probably made some progress but couldn't seem to get rid of that last bit of so called "stubborn" body fat. It's virtually impossible to lose body fat if you don't take part in routine physical exercise (weight training Included) and have a properly balanced diet with possibly the help of some multi vitamin and mineral supplements. By weight training, you will end up burning fat for hours and even days after your training session.

Fat

One amazing fact is that fat cells do not multiply after puberty - as your body stores more fat, the number of fat cells remains the same. Each fat cell simply gets bigger! If a person keeps overeating, fat cells grow and grow, looking as if they are about to pop. When they reach the limit, they don't divide; they send out a signal to nearby immature cells to start dividing to produce more fat cells.

Your weight is determined by the rate at which you store energy from the food that you eat, and the rate at which you use that energy. Remember that as your body breaks down fat, the number of fat cells remains the same; each fat cell simply gets smaller.
Most experts agree that the way to maintain a healthy weight is: Eat a balanced diet - appropriate amounts of carbohydrates, fat and protein Do not eat excessively - for most people, a diet of 1,500 to 2,000 calories a day is sufficient to maintain a healthy weight. Losing weight and keeping it off is simple, it’s the same as it was for the last few thousand years. Eat healthy food (for life) and be more physically active (for life) are the two key factors in losing weight and keeping it off over time. Take a good balanced vitamin and mineral supplement to keep your body topped up. There are also some natural supplements that will help to speed up your metabolism.

Vitamins and Minerals

Vitamins and minerals boost the immune system; support normal growth and development, and help cells and organs do their jobs. If your diet includes a wide variety of foods, including whole-grain products, fresh fruits and vegetables, dairy products, nuts, seeds, eggs, and meats, then you are probably getting the vitamins and minerals your body needs. Check with your doctor before taking vitamin or mineral supplements. Some people think that if something is good for you, then the more you take in, the healthier you'll be. But that's not necessarily true when it comes to vitamins and minerals. For example, fat-soluble vitamins or minerals, which the body stores and excretes more slowly, can build up in your system to levels where they could cause problems. If you do take supplements, you should be careful not to get more than 100% of the recommended dietary allowance (RDA) for a particular vitamin or mineral. The RDA is calculated to provide 100% of the dietary needs for 98.6% of the population.

Fibre

Fibre is an important part of our diet. It is sometimes called roughage and are all terms for the same thing: complex carbohydrates that cannot be digested by the body. Fibre is essential for healthy bowel function. When fibre passes through the bowel it absorbs a lot of water, so it increases the bulk of the waste matter. This also makes the waste softer and increases the speed and ease with which it passes through the bowel. There are two types of fibre: soluble and insoluble. There are no calories, vitamins or minerals in fibre and it is not digested when we eat it.

Soluble Fibre

Soluble fibre is beneficial to help lower blood cholesterol levels and, in people with diabetes, helps to control blood sugar. Soluble fibre is found in fruits, vegetables, dried peas, soybeans, lentils, oats, rice and barley.

Insoluble Fibre

Because of its 'bulking properties' it gives a feeling of fullness. This helps in weight control as you feel fuller on less food. In addition, fibre is not absorbed, so cannot be turned into calories through digestion.  Foods containing insoluble fibre include wholegrain and wholemeal wheat-based breads, cereals and pasta. There aren't calories in fibre, but it plays important role in the process of digestion. There are cellulose and pectin in fibre, which give bowels active, that's why shortage of fibre is a reason of constipation.

Ways to Speed Up Your Metabolism

Get active - it's the best way to increase the amount of muscle you have, the more muscle you have the more fat you burn. Don’t skip breakfast and make sure its high in fibre. Eat little and often – your metabolism is like a furnace the more often you put wood in the fire the longer the fire burns. The idea is to never let yourself get hungry. One way to accomplish this would be to eat three healthy nutritious meals and eat healthy nutritious snacks or fruit in between those meals. Eat plenty of protein-rich foods - research shows that around 25 percent of calories in a protein-rich meal may be burnt off. But make sure you choose low-fat protein foods such as lean meat, skinless chicken and low-fat dairy products. Spice up meals - it's not an old wives tale after all! Spices like chilli are thought to raise metabolism by up to 50 percent for up to three hours after eating, due to increasing your heart rate.  Swap your daily cuppa for green tea - there's evidence that it contains antioxidants that speed up metabolism. Take a good balanced vitamin and mineral supplement to keep your body topped up. There are also some natural supplements that will help to speed up your metabolism like CLA supplement - research has shown that conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) might increase muscle and therefore boost metabolism. Remember to always consult your doctor before taking any kind of supplements. It sounds easy but in reality some people may find it hard to diet and may need the initial help/incentive from weight losing program.
